Market Commentary
Market Stance: BEARISH (since June 25, 2010)
I turned bullish one week ago (June 18), but that, turns out, was a mistake.
The S&P gave back -3.6%, and Deen Capital accounts lost even more, -3.8%.
My #1 reason for turning bullish one week ago has evaporated. My stock-picks
indicator, bullish then, is bearish now. And so, yesterday, Friday, June 25,
I turned bearish and raised our cash level substantially.
On the other hand, I would not want to bet on the market going down from
here. The market was down every day last week except Friday. Friday was may
have been a key turning point. The market was up only modestly, but volume
was extremely heavy. Such volume hints at a possible change in market
direction.
In other words, even though my indicators do not show it, I think there is a
fair to good chance that the market hit bottom yesterday and will start
trending higher next week.
We are now only 35% in stocks, I'm officially bearish, and yet I am open
to increasing that exposure.
By the way, year-to-date, the scorecard reads: Deen Capital +3.4%, S&P
-2.6%.
My Three Primary Technical Indicators:
Prior week Now
---------- -------
NASDAQ Timing Model (Ver.10r): BEARISH BEARISH
(1) Last signal: BEARISH on Apr 27, 2010
Performance of Recent Stock Picks: +7.4 BULLISH +1.7 BEARISH (2)
Market Internals: 40% NEUTRAL 35% NEUTRAL (3)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Market's Overall Technical Rating: NEUTRAL BEARISH
Stocks:Cash ratio (average): 91:9 35:65
(1) A proprietary computer model based on technical analysis of the NASDAQ
Composite.
(2) This number (from -10 to +10) is based on the performance of ALL my
recent stock picks (I actually buy only some of these). A positive number
means my recent stock picks are generally rising; a negative number means
they are generally falling. Even so, I consider a reading below +3.1 to be
bearish. I require a reading of +5.6 or better to call this indicator
bullish.
(3) This is the percentage of stocks ($8 and up) which are trading above
their 50-day moving average. The rating of this percentage (bullish, bearish
or neutral) is based on which way it's been moving recently -- up, down or
sideways.
