* Buy prices shown are net after commissions and fees. Today, Wednesday, October 21, 2009, I bought AAPL, first for client accounts, then for my personal accounts. Apple Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiaries design, manufacture, and market personal computers, portable digital music players, and mobile communication devices, and sell various related software, services, peripherals, and networking solutions. This stock is a component of the S&P 500, S&P 100, NASDAQ 100, and IBD 100 Indexes. ("IBD" = "Investor's Business Daily") Here's why I bought this stock: + News: On Monday, October 19, after the close, the company announced results for the quarter ended September 30. Earnings came in at $1.82 per diluted share (vs $1.26 last year and analysts' consensus $1.40). Revenue was up 25% to $9.87 billion (analysts' consensus $9.13 billion). + Breakout: Yesterday and today, the stock is breaking out of a 21-month trading range to a new all-time high on heavy volume. + Excellent and accelerating recent sales growth. Here are the quarterly year-to-year sales growth rates from the last four quarters, in chronological order: +6%, +9%, +12%, and, most recently, as cited above, +25%. + Excellent recent earnings-per-share growth. Here are the quarterly EPS figures for the last eight quarters:
Sep 08 vs Sep 07: $1.78 vs 1.76 Dec 08 vs Dec 07: $1.33 vs 1.16 Mar 09 vs Mar 08: $1.35 vs 1.19 Jun 09 vs Jun 08: $1.82 vs 1.26 + Strong and rising earnings-per-share estimates: According to recent data from First Call, the consensus earnings estimate for FY 10 (ends Sep 30) is $7.58, revised upward from $6.70 90 days ago (and up from FY 09 actual earnings of $6.29); and the consensus estimate for FY 11 is $9.17, revised upward from $7.88 90 days ago. + Valuation: At 22.5 times next year's estimated earnings and a projected 5-year annualized earnings growth rate of 18%, the stock is still, even after yesterday's big gain, moderately priced. + History of earnings surprises: This company has reported earnings-per-share at least 15c above estimates in each of the past five quarters, including the just-reported quarter cited above, which "beat the Street" by 40c. + The company's industry group ("Computer - Manufacturers") is ranked #20 for relative strength out of 197 industry groups tracked by Investor's Business Daily. This ranking changes daily, and it has been generally rising over recent weeks and months. + The stock's 200-day moving average is rising, indicating a long-term uptrend. -KD, Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Model Portfolio
