  Market Commentary

Market Stance: BEARISH (since November 1, 2007)

It was an ugly week, as the drumbeat of bad news continued from the likes of Citigroup, Washington Mutual, and Qualcomm. Tech leaders Apple, Google, and Research-In-Motion, which had been going straight up in recent months, fell hard. My indicators are now unanimously and extremely bearish.

In terms of Deen Capital performance, a key component of my success in recent years has been my ability to manage risk successfully. By this I mean both gaining more than the S&P during up markets, and, equally if not more important, losing less during down markets. Even though we lost money last week, we lost less than the S&P, and I view that as a victory.

I have to laugh out loud when I hear money managers on CNBC talk about maintaining a "high level" of cash due to weak market conditions -- when pressed, they're typically talking about 10% or so. When I'm bearish, I'm more likely to hold 40% to 100% cash. 10% just doesn't cut it.

"To outperform the S&P through up markets and down" -- in recent years, that's my goal, my focus, and my motto.

My Three Primary Technical Indicators:

                                       Prior week Now
                                       ---------- -------
NASDAQ Timing Model (Ver.10q): BEARISH BEARISH (1)
Last signal: BEARISH on Nov 1, 2007

Performance of Recent Stock Picks: +4.8 NEUTRAL -5.2 BEARISH (2)

Market Internals: 47% BEARISH 31% BEARISH (3)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Market's Overall Technical Rating: BEARISH BEARISH

Stocks:Cash ratio (average): 53:47 40:60

(1) A proprietary computer model based on technical analysis of the NASDAQ Composite.

(2) This number (from -10 to +10) is based on the performance of ALL my recent stock picks (I actually buy only some of these). A positive number means my recent stock picks are generally rising; a negative number means they are generally falling. Even so, I consider a reading below +3.1 to be bearish. I require a reading of +5.6 or better to call this indicator bullish.

(3) This is the percentage of stocks ($8 and up) which are trading above their 50-day moving average. The rating of this percentage (bullish, bearish or neutral) is based on which way it's been moving recently -- up, down or sideways.
