Market Stance: BULLISH (since March 21, 2007)Last week, Deen Capital managed accounts posted a small gain in spite of a one-day 17% drop in one of our stocks (SMSI) on Thursday. I found no reason for the drop except that the stock was downgraded from "buy" to "hold" by one analyst. SMSI had been our biggest winner until Thursday. We surrendered most, but not all, of our gain in this stock -- we still are showing a small paper profit. The market as a whole is behaving quite well. We're in the thick of earnings season now, and there are plenty of upside surprises. The NASDAQ broke out to a six-year high on Friday. Volume, however, receded versus Thursday's level, which suggests to me that this "breakout" should be viewed with suspicion. My indicators remain bullish overall, and, therefore, so do I. But we are at a critical juncture here. The 2500 to 2525 level has twice been a topping area for the NASDAQ this year. We're at 2526 now, and it's very possible we could be forming another top right now. In summary, I remain bullish, but I am also in a state of high alert. My Three Primary Technical Indicators:
Prior week Now
---------- -------
NASDAQ Timing Model (Ver.10q): BULLISH BULLISH (1)
Last signal: BULLISH on Apr 13, 2007
Performance of Recent Stock Picks: +5.6 BULLISH +5.0 NEUTRAL (2)
Market Internals: 62% BULLISH 70% BULLISH (3)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Rating: BULLISH BULLISH
Stocks:Cash ratio (Ken's IRA): 82:18 95:5
(1) A proprietary computer model based on technical analysis of the NASDAQ Composite. (2) This number (from -10 to +10) is based on the performance of ALL my stock picks (I actually buy only some of these). A positive number means my stock picks are generally rising; a negative number means they are generally falling. Even so, I consider a reading below +3.1 to be bearish. I require a reading of +5.6 or better to call this indicator bullish. (3) This is the percentage of stocks ($8 and up) which are trading above their 50-day moving average. The rating of this percentage (bullish, bearish or neutral) is based on which way it's been moving recently -- up, down or sideways. -KD, April 20, 2007
