Year-To-Date Performance
* An average of managed accounts, net after commissions and fees. Individual account results may vary. See also www.deencapital.com/perform.htm. For information on managed accounts, see www.deencapital.com/mgdaccts.htm. Market Stance: BULLISH (since July 28, 2006)The market is doing fine. The major averages had an up week, an up month (September), and an up quarter. The Dow is only 44 points away from an all-time high. (The NASDAQ, on the other hand, while also doing well lately, must gain another 123% from here to get back to its all-time high. In all the euphoria about the Dow, the financial press rarely mentions this!) Yet Deen Capital accounts had a down week, a down month, and a down quarter. What's going on? No need to panic. We still have outstanding performance on a year-to-date and trailing 52-week basis -- easily better than the market averages. A significant part of the problem lately is that small-cap stocks have begun to under-perform their large-cap brethren. This appears to be a new trend. In recognition of this trend, I am more inclined to buy large-cap and less inclined to buy small-cap going forward, at least until small-caps once again show signs of leadership. My technical indicators deteriorated from overall bullish to overall neutral last week, which means the yellow caution flag is out. Managed accounts are about one-third in cash now, and, if anything, I may consider increasing that cash level. I don't like the way things are going here recently. It may be time to pull in my horns, at least a bit. My Three Primary Technical Indicators:
Prior week Now
---------- -------
NASDAQ Timing Model (Ver.10q): BULLISH BULLISH (1)
Performance of Recent Stock Picks: +2.2 BEARISH +1.7 BEARISH (2)
Market Internals: +67 BULLISH +69 NEUTRAL (3)
Overall Rating: BULLISH NEUTRAL
(1) A proprietary computer model based on technical analysis of the NASDAQ Composite. Last signal: BULLISH on Jul 28, 2006. (2) This number (from -10 to +10) is based on the performance of ALL my stock picks (I actually buy only some of these). A positive number means my stock picks are generally rising; a negative number means they are generally falling. Even so, I consider a reading below +3.1 to be bearish. I require a reading of +5.6 or better to call this indicator bullish. (3) This is the percentage of stocks ($8 and up) which are trading above their 50-day moving average. The rating of this percentage (bullish, bearish or neutral) is based on which way it's been moving recently -- up, down or sideways. -KD, September 30, 2006
