  Market Commentary

Market Stance: BEARISH (since September 23, 2005)

The market took a sharp turn for the worse last week. Deen Capital accounts were down, though not quite as bad, in most cases, as the major market averages.

First, the Fed sent shock waves through the market on Tuesday by downplaying the effects of Hurricane Katrina. It appears there will be not even a pause in their march toward higher interest rates. Second, we had a very significant fear factor regarding Hurricane Rita.

Two of my three technical indicators shifted from neutral to bearish last week, and I turned bearish on Friday. My Performance-of-Recent-Stock-Picks Index fell last week from +4.9 to -1.4 (scale -10 to +10). Anything below +3.1 is bearish. My other bearish indicator is the percentage of stocks trading above their 50-day moving average, which fell last week from 54% to 40%. On Wednesday and Thursday, it was 39%. These are the lowest readings since mid-May.

I did some selling last week, so that the volatility of our accounts is now on a par with the S&P 500. (One week ago, our accounts were about 1.5 times as volatile as the S&P.) I may choose to reduce our risk profile further as next week unfolds, due to deteriorating market conditions.

Now, on Saturday afternoon, we know that damage from Rita will be far less than our worst fears. This may trigger a relief rally early next week. But I won't trust it until if and when my three technical indicators return to an overall bullish condition.
